Solution Paths - Visual Parables

When solving a maths problem, sometimes students take a direct path, sometimes they can’t see a clear path, sometimes they get distracted and want to play instead. Visual images from a hiking trip I took with my family in Utah illustrate many of these ideas. The purpose of these pictures is to help us to reflect that there is not just one solution path to every problem. This is adapted from a message given at the 2021 Maths Summit. Teaching Students How to Review for a Test

In this video we discuss how to move beyond a review sheet and help students evaluate their own learning and become more responsible. As adults we prioritise our review time and focus on what we need to study. We need to intentionally teach these skills to our students. A model that uses learning objectives and targeted review problems is discussed. The PowerPoint slides associated with this training video can be downloaded via the links provided at the end of this article.

Test Taking Strategies

Several strategies to help students reduce their anxiety and stress surrounding taking tests are discussed. We also discuss one suggestion for helping students pace themselves so they earn all the credit they can on a test. Lastly, we discuss a systemic idea for how to help our students feel more confident in their problem-solving abilities.

Giving Meaningful Feedback on Homework

If we think of teaching like coaching, then this changes how we give feedback during practice (homework and classwork) time. Coaches do not give grades during practice, the game (test) is the measure of how much an athlete (student) has improved. Several ways of giving meaningful feedback on homework are given. This is adapted from a message given at the 2022 Principal’s Conference. The PowerPoint slides associated with this training video can be downloaded via the links provided at the end of this article.

The Power of Choice in Homework Assignments

We all like to be in control. Giving students a choice on their Homework assignments is a way to share control or power in the classroom. Several suggestions for how to give students choices on homework assignments are discussed. The PowerPoint slides associated with this training video can be downloaded via the links provided at the end of this article.

Supporting Student’s Effort or Struggle

In this video we review messages from President Nelson and Dr. Carol Dweck about the rewards of effort and struggle. We also review and give suggestions for how to praise effort in 4 typical classroom interactions. This message was given at the Principal’s Conference 26 Aug 2021. The PowerPoint slides associated with this training video can be downloaded via the links provided at the end of this article.
