Frayer Model - Student Created Dictionary

The Frayer Model was developed to help students learn vocabulary terms. Students create a page for each term that includes the definition of the term, properties or facts related to it, examples, and counter examples or antonyms of the term. This model can be used as part of a long-term project for students to create their own maths dictionaries. Students learn much more by thinking deeply about terms, examples, non-examples, and properties and how to represent those in their own ways.

Polygraph - A Game Students Play in Pairs

Polygraphs are collections of 16 related pictures. The game has students use the vocabulary that distinguishes these objects. To play: one student, the picker, chooses a picture but does not tell which one it is. The other student, the guesser, asks yes or no questions to determine which picture was chosen. An example round is shown. And many of the polygraph options available on teacher.desmos.com are mentioned.

Convince Me - A Game Students Play in Pairs

This is a game developed by Dr. Jo Boaler and her team. The goal is to get students to discuss the properties and attributes of maths concepts and to work on reasoning skills. To play: one student is asked to fold a geometric shape and then convince their partner that their construction is correct. The partner is to ask questions that help the folder to defend their construction. Other applications of this game to other areas of maths are also discussed.

WODB - Which One Doesn't Belong

Each example is a collection of 4 related images. Students are to notice what is common and different between the objects. They are to identify which one does not belong and give a reason for their statement. There are many correct answers to each example. Creative thinking, reasoning, and arguments are encouraged. This activity can be for an entire class, a small group, or given as an individual assignment.
