Conducting a number talk on representing 7 in several different ways. Building number flexibility with small numbers. Review of the steps of a number talk.
Visual Dot Card Number Talk
After briefly showing a card with an arrangement of dots, students are asked how many dots there are. The discussion then centers around how the students saw the total number of dots. We give this type of problem to honor the fact that we all see maths differently and that the different ways students see maths should be respected.
Number Flexibility - How Many Ways Can You Represent 36?
This activity could be adapted to a number talk, maths journal assignment, or a several days project. Students are encouraged to think creatively about how to represent 36. The discussion should include ideas of place value and nearby benchmark numbers.
