Integer Addition on a Number Line

An explanation of how to use the open number line to demonstrate how to add with integers or signed numbers. Positive numbers are interpreted as walking forwards and negative numbers are interpreted as walking backwards.

Integer Subtraction on a Number Line

An explanation of how to use the open number line to demonstrate how to subtract with integers or signed numbers. Subtraction is interpreted as “turning around,” positive numbers are interpreted as walking forwards, and negative numbers are interpreted as walking backwards.

Integer Multiplication on a Number Line

An explanation of how to use the open number line to demonstrate how to multiply with integers or signed numbers using the repeated addition method. The first factor determines the number of jumps and the direction one faces. The second factor determines how long the jumps are and if the jumps are in the forwards or backwards direction.

Integer Division on a Number Line, Not a Recommended Method

An explanation of how to use the number line to demonstrate how to divide with integers or signed numbers. Several of the difficulties with this method are shown. A better way to demonstrate integer division is shown in the Division of Integers Using the Missing Factor Model video.
