Overview
Part 1
The first portion of this session focused on a diminishing returns task. Most participants were sent to breakout rooms to investigate the task with colleagues, after which reports were given to the whole group. Participants investigated repeating patterns and the portion of the figures coloured blue. The investigation involved fractions, proportions, areas, and repeated reasoning.
Part 2
Jenni gave a summary of the main points covered in the summit. She outlined the importance, benefits, and costs of task-based learning. Other key points included:
- Maths can be visual, fun, and creative
- Our reasoning is what is most important
- The goal is to enjoy the journey as we strive for perfection
- Individual in-service meetings will resume in August
Schools were also asked to discuss their plans for improving maths instruction moving forward and to present those plans briefly to the group.
