Original Question: If a student is a non-member and pays “non-member” fees, what happens if the student becomes a member part-way through the year?
In 2016 we set out some guidelines to help answer this question using two different scenarios.
SCENARIO ONE: Baptized Before the 42 Day Deadline After School Starts
A non-member student registers their interest to attend a LDS Church School and is approved for enrolment, they have until the first day of school to pay their school fees. Based on their membership status at the time of enrolment their annual tuition and fees are assessed to the student.
Students then have up until 42 days after school has started to pay their fees. If there are outstanding or non-payment of fees after the 42 days, the student will be terminated from school enrolment.
If their membership status changes from non-member to member before the end of the 42 day deadline, they will be required to pay the non-member fee for the 1st term. This fee will be calculated by the finance department and adjusted. They will then assess a member fee for the 2nd and 3rd terms. If full payment was made, we can reimburse the difference in Tuition, less any outstanding Fees.
NOTE: There is no expectation that they be a member for a full year before they are eligible for the member Tuition rate.
SCENARIO TWO: Baptized During Term 2 or Term 3
Full Non-Member Tuition fees should have been paid in full, by the start of the 2nd Term (after the 42 day deadline).
If they are baptized, and notify the School and Finance, the change will be made in PowerSchool to the student’s membership status. The Non-Member fee will be recalculated within PowerSchool for the remaining terms and credited back to the student’s wallet, the new member tuition will be assessed for the remaining term’s tuition.
If there are any funds remaining in the student’s wallet, these will be refunded back to the student. For example, if baptized in 2nd term, they will get a reduction in Tuition for the 3rd term. If baptized in the 3rd term, the reduction will take effect in the following year’s tuition rate.
